The UVA alumni magazine has a nice profile of retiring U President John Casteen. In his 20 years, he has built the University’s reputation, academic standards, new facilties, a strong endowment, an excellent faculty, and a qualified and diverse student body. The article qoutes Student Dean Ernie Ern as saying that Casteen told him that he wanted to be president of the University or Governor. Casteen demurred, but he might give it some consideration. Only one person – Colgate Darden – has held those two highest honors.
Also – congratulations to the University for their brave stand for academic freedom in response to AG Cuccinelli’s witch hunt. It is disgraceful that our publicity-seeking, right wing extremist AG continues to waste our money (and the Commonwealth’s reputation) on this kind of nonsense.
