Saturday morning of JJ weekend featured the 5th annual VaDWC fundraising breakfast, which focused on legislative issues with presentations by Delegates Vivian Watts and Jennifer McClellan, State Senator Louise Lucas, and Gena Boyle, the Domestic Violence Coordinator for the Virginia Action Alliance of Sexual and Domestic Violence. Bills of concern included those increasing penalties for stalking and facilitating the ability to obtain protective orders in dating situations, mandating family life education programs, addressing human trafficking, ensure that immigration initiatives do not affect services available to victims, and changing the law which bars rape prosecutions involving minors if the attacker and victim get married. It was a nice breakfast, a good cause, an opportunity to meet other Democrats, and very enlightening.
